04°10'12"W (South of the breakwater, Plymouth)

The Elk is a wreck of an old trawler that was used as a fishing boat and sank after hitting a mine in 1940. It lies in approximately 30m of water, sitting upright on the sandy bottom. There are clear signs of damage on the port side offering chance to penetrate for experienced divers. I've had it on good authority that there are some huge conger eels that live in this wreck, although I didn't get to see them. However I did see some pollack and pouting and plenty of gorgonia and deadmans fingers on the nearby reef. A good wreck dive but can be hard to find.

Dived in fantastic conditions on June 18th 2005. Lovely wreck, incredible fish life, easy to swim around several times.

Very good dive site but don't penetrate the wreck unless you have the training. Only saw the two buoys marking the wreck though. Swimming through the hanger and bridge is pretty cool and before we ascended to start our decompression stop we had a look in the forward Snr Rates heads which was weird as myself and my dive buddy are both in the Royal Navy. Before we left we also placed an Ensign on the Flightdeck and took some photos which are due to appear in the March 06 issue of Navy News. Highly recommended wreck dive.

HMS Elk is a great dive, and one of those places that does have several congers in the wreck. It's a small compact wreck, and can easily be circumnavigated. It sits upright on a rocky shingle bottom, and on its bows has a dense mass of red deadmans fingers. When we dived it last a very large of bib were hovering nearby.
