Scuba Diving Kuredu Resort, Lhaviyani Atoll, Maldives
Kuredu is the northern most island in Lhaviyani Atoll. Located 80km north of Male international Airport, it is accessed by regular seaplane transfers, which take about 45 minutes. Kurdeu is a fairly large and hugely popular resort of 500 villas, including beach bungalows (3*), Beach, Jacuzzi villas and Water villas, all 4*. Sea plane transfers come into the south of the resort, so the villas to the north are the quietist, but are located further away from the dive centre, main bar and restaurant areas. On booking, if you specify your preference of location on the island this will be taken into consideration.
For non-divers there are plenty of activities, including golf, spas, pools, a water sports centre (windsurfing, kite surfing, pedalos etc), fishing trips, dolphin trips and snorkelling.
The dive centre is an award winning centre and runs numerous courses as well as running a very flexible dive package program, ideal if you are with a non-diver or if you wish to fit in as many dives as possible. The options include, but are not limited to:
- 3-tank boat:
A full day out on the boat, ideal for reaching the southerly dive sites of the atoll. This includes a BBQ lunch on an uninhabited island.
- 2-tank boat:
A half-day out on the boat, arriving back in time for lunch in resort, generally diving sites to the north of the atoll, close to Kuredu.
- 1-tank boat:
Running both in the morning and afternoon, generally diving sites close to Kuredu. Ideal for people just wanting to do a relaxing couple of dives during their holiday, or topping up to a third dive of the day, following a morning 2-tank dive and eating lunch in the resort.
There is a house reef, which is accessed from the jetty and done as a shore dive. Anyone new to the resort, even if you've dived recently but not in the Maldives is expected to do their first dive on the house reef to check weights and perform some skills with an instructor. If you are a repeat visitor to Kuredu then this may be wavered. Nitrox is available at no additional charge, rebreathers are available for hire with the relevant qualifications and cameras are available to hire on a daily or per dive basis.
The guides are very flexible with your choice of dive site and if a request is put in the day before you should be able to choose the site you want to dive on. The operational running of the centre, guides, staff and set-up is superb. There is no need to book prior to you arrival at the resort, however I suggest you register on the day of arrival to book an orientation dive. After this you need to book your diving preference each day for the following day. Book at the earliest opportunity to ensure you do the number of dives and type of diving that you want during your stay.
There is a substantial workshop for any equipment repairs and I was impressed with the time taken out at no cost to repair a spring in my personal BCD inflate which had broken. Many places would have tried to sell a new hose, or hired out a regulator for the duration of the holiday. Overall this was a very enjoyable resort to dive from with excellent facilities.
