Scuba Diving in Cuba, Caribbean
Reader Reviews:
Dive Site: La Patana
Location: Cienfuegos, Cuba
Description: Wreck / reef
Depth: 31 metres + (100 feet)
Visibility: 15 metres (50 feet)
Rating: ***
This was our first dive in Cuba and the rough weather meant we had to work hard to get our dive guide to take the boat out, but after some persuasion he agreed. The wreck of the Patana is only a short boat ride from the harbour at Faro de Luna and although small was almost completely intact, lying at an angle on the sloping sea floor when we dived here in October 2000. The wreck is only a small feature of this dive though and the reef is intersected by gullies and there are many swim-though opportunities in the reef wall, although the gullies seemed strangely devoid of fish life. For an advanced diver there is the possibility of dropping down the wall to a depth of much more than 30 metres. The fish life was not that prolific but there were tangs, wrasse and angelfish. The coral is in good condition and there is an abundance of sponges.
