Scuba Diving in Cuba, Caribbean
Reader Reviews:
Dive Site: Acuario
Location: Near Trinidad, Sancti Spiritus, Cuba
Description: Fabulous coral garden
Depth: 16 metres max (52 feet)
Visibility: 15 - 20 metres (50 - 65 feet)
Rating: *****
This site is reached after a gentle cruise of approximately 5 minutes travel time from the jetty. On free descending (no shot line), the beautiful coral garden is immediately apparent. Although there was an almost total absence of fish, there were examples of almost every type of coral. It was so perfect, I thought I would start seeing identifying labels next to each example - if Disney designed a coral garden, it would be like this. Mind you, President Bush would prosecute the few fish for trading with the enemy.
Frequently, the dive guide handed myself and Martine (my buddy, a coldwater obsessed Canadian and an excellent diver) sea cucumbers, sea spiders, etc; this was not an environmentally friendly dive, and slightly disconcerting. It is also an odd experience, when the closest one gets to interesting life in UK waters is watching friends trying to grab crabs under Swanage Pier.
Basically, the best fish-free dive site I have ever visited; if ever a name change were needed from "fishtank".
